The Meadowlark Garden and Gallery is located at 210 West Mill Street, one of the original German settler lots laid out in 1845. During the majority of the 19th century, the lot was a downtown garden oasis surrounded by residential and commercial buildings. Reconstructed gardens now surround the historic Soechting fachwerk farmhouse, which was brought to this location, restored and expanded with a contemporary addition, purposely designed for the display of fine and rare works of art.
The original structure was built around 1850 as a single-floor building with three exterior doors, opening to a front porch and bordered on the rear with a smaller sloping roof porch. During the restoration, the building was raised onto a concrete wall foundation and enlarged, with an addition of a large rear open exhibition area beneath a soaring, natural light beamed ceiling that followed the lines of the original roof. Floor to ceiling glass panels and sliding doors open to a covered balcony facing a garden of native Texas plants, ligustrum, pecan, and hackberry trees.
An interior contemporary iron, limestone, and glass staircase descends to the garden level with an open room bordered by art-designed concrete walls, an advanced artwork hanging system, display shelving, and three double glass doors leading to the garden. The light-filled room has a white-painted beamed ceiling with polished wood and modern furnishings, enhancing the experience of viewing works of art. A caterer’s kitchen, storage area, and restroom are at the end.
The rear street level garden is original to the location with soft native grasses, a juniper palisade fence and massive limestone rock steps and foundation. A wrought-iron fence outlines the sunken garden which is accessible by limestone steps or an elevator. The lower area has a weathered wood floor with contemporary black steel planting beds, bamboo and native Texas limestone rock formations.
